FAQ - Why do I have to license your software?

Belcarra's software is all licensed to and through OEMs and/or manufacturers. When the host OS is Linux or another open-source environment, the licensing terms usually allow the OEM to release certain portions of Belcarra's product under GPL license. This provides potential new customers a chance to see Belcarra's code. Belcarra never accepts updates from the community and therefore the code remains exclusively Belcarra property. Although various derivative versions of Belcarra's software may be available under GPL, Belcarra only supports directly licensed versions of its software and does not accept updates from the open source community. A directly licensed version is guaranteed to be completely free of any GPL code. This allows Belcarra to maintain a single internal codebase completely free of GPL cross-contamination.

Due to the nature of the GPL, it is not possible to use software released under it in a closed source system. Belcarra ensures there is no cross contamination of the source we license for use in closed source systems with anything from others' release under GPL, ensuring that there will be no legal problems when the product is in production.

There are also specific pieces of our software which remain proprietary. These include our administration tools such as usbadmin.
